In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) Ghana and the Ghanaian Diaspora Nursing Alliance (G-DNA) have inked a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to welcome skilled Ghanaian nurses abroad back to their roots.

Unlocking Opportunities for Returning Nurses

This strategic partnership aims to dismantle barriers hindering Ghanaian nurses abroad from returning to contribute to the nation's healthcare sector. With an innovative approach, the agreement promises to exempt returning nurses from entrance exams, streamlining the registration process and fostering a welcoming environment.

Mrs. Philomena Woolley, the Acting Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council, emphasized the monumental significance of this collaboration, particularly for second-generation nurses and those trained abroad. The collaboration anticipates welcoming over 1,000 nurses, recognizing and leveraging the valuable expertise they bring.

Prioritizing Expertise and Collaboration

Reducing stringent registration requirements is at the forefront of this collaboration, acknowledging the global contribution of Ghanaian nurses. Yvonne Commodore-Mensah, president and co-founder of G-DNA, highlighted the collaborative efforts to ease barriers for returning nurses and addressed the annual healthcare challenge posed by the migration of Ghanaian nurses.

"The issue of ethical migration and recruitment is a priority of the Ghanaian Diaspora Nursing Alliance. People often think that individuals leave solely for financial reasons, but we learned that this is not the only concern. Nurses are working in environments that lack protection, with some working without gloves and enduring long hours without fair compensation."

Comprehensive Approach to Ethical Migration

The two-year MoU extends beyond mere collaboration; it encompasses research, evidence-based practices, and capacity building. G-DNA's commitment includes supporting nursing education in Ghana through fundraising and grants. This collaboration not only facilitates the return of skilled nurses but also positions the NMC to adopt best practices and stay abreast of new trends in healthcare delivery.

A Vision for a Brighter Healthcare Future

This visionary collaboration between NMC and G-DNA offers a beacon of hope for the healthcare sector, fostering an environment that encourages Ghanaian nurses abroad to return home. As Ghana positions itself to benefit from the wealth of expertise these nurses bring, this partnership sets a precedent for collaborative efforts in building a robust and resilient healthcare system for the nation.
