Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Real, has pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to receive stolen money. The money was obtained from a series of romance scams that targeted unsuspecting victims online.
The 31-year-old Ghanaian socialite appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave today and confessed to her role in the money laundering scheme. She faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for this crime.
As part of her plea deal, Montrage has agreed to forfeit and pay back the same amount of money that she laundered, which amounts to $2,164,758.41.
Hajia4Real made a surprising move in November 2023 when she changed her legal counsel. She parted ways with Adam Cortez, who had been representing her since the start of her prosecution.
She then hired Ms. Eleanor Fast from ‘The Fast Law Firm PC’ as her new attorney. She filed a request for a change in attorney to the US court on November 8, 2023, and it was approved on November 9, 2023.
The exact reasons for her switch of lawyers were not revealed.
