It was a dark day for the Ampea Memorial School community in Nkawkaw, Kwahu West Municipality, when a school bus accident took the lives of three students and a teacher on Thursday. The bus, which was carrying 20 children and two teachers, collided with a state-owned vehicle on the main road, leaving 17 children in critical condition and one teacher injured.
The accident happened around 8:30 am, when the school bus, a Hyundai Grace with registration number GE 2291-10, attempted to join the main road from a side road without checking for traffic. Eyewitnesses said the bus was hit by a white Nissan Patrol with registration number GT 8455-19, which belonged to a District Chief Executive who was on his way from Accra to Kumasi.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the bus was badly damaged and some of the children were trapped inside. Passers-by and locals rushed to the scene to rescue the victims and take them to the nearest hospitals, Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and Agyarkwa Hospital, both private facilities.
According to Citi Tv, some of the injured children were later transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua for further treatment. The driver of the Nissan Patrol and the District Chief Executive were also injured and taken to the hospital.
The Nkawkaw MTTD personnel who arrived at the scene have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and the negligence of the drivers involved.
The news of the accident spread quickly and caused grief and panic among the families and friends of the victims, as well as the entire Nkawkaw community. Many people visited the hospitals to offer their support and condolences to the bereaved and the injured.
The Ampea Memorial School has expressed its sorrow and sympathy for the loss of its students and teacher, and has announced that it will provide counselling and assistance to the affected families. The school has also suspended its academic activities until further notice.
The accident has raised questions about the safety and regulation of school buses and other vehicles on the road, and has called for more awareness and education on road safety among drivers and pedestrians. The accident has also highlighted the need for more emergency and health services in the area, as well as better infrastructure and road maintenance.
