Ghana is set to process its own bauxite to produce alumina, the main ingredient for aluminium production, according to President Akufo-Addo. The alumina will be supplied to the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) and other downstream aluminium companies.
The President said that this marks the end of the era of exporting raw bauxite from the country, and the beginning of a new phase of industrial transformation.
He made these remarks at the 67th Independence Day celebration in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on March 6. He expressed his confidence that this project would boost Ghana's industrialization and create opportunities for local manufacturing.
"We have finally reached the point where we can process our own bauxite to produce alumina that will feed the VALCO smelter and the downstream aluminium industry, which will have a huge impact on Ghana's industrialization when we produce parts for motor vehicles, aircrafts, roofing sheets and household utensils.
"It has not been easy to get to this stage, but we have made sure that we do it right," he said.
President Akufo-Addo also assured that the development of the Kyebi bauxite mine and refinery would proceed once the legal issues over the Atewa Forest Range in Kyebi are resolved. He said that this would create jobs and income for the people of the area, as well as enhance the value chain of the bauxite/aluminium industry.
"As a native, I hope that, once the litigation over the Atewa Forest Range, in Kyebi, is settled, we will be able to develop the Kyebi bauxite mine and refinery, that will help provide employment and high-paying jobs for our people, and also ensure integration and value addition across the bauxite/aluminium value chain," he said.
