As the global fight against COVID-19 continues, Ghana has encountered a recent uptick in new cases, with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reporting 31 additional cases in the past week. However, there's reassuring news from the frontlines – these cases are characterized as non-severe, offering a glimmer of hope amidst ongoing challenges.
Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, the Programmes Manager at the Expanded Programme on Immunization within the Ghana Health Service, shared insights during a media briefing in Accra. Dr. Amponsah-Achiano underscored the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of COVID-19, emphasizing that the virus has become an enduring part of daily life.
"In the past week or so, we were recording some significant numbers up to about 30 or 31 or so. But this is not unexpected. As we have already been saying, COVID has come to stay with us. It is part of us," Dr. Amponsah-Achiano explained.
Despite these challenges, Ghana Health Service remains steadfast in its commitment to mitigating the spread of the virus and protecting public health. In line with this commitment, a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign is set to commence on Sunday, May 5th.
"We haven’t given up on vaccination," Dr. Amponsah-Achiano affirmed. "From 5th to 9th May, we are going to do another exercise of COVID vaccination. So, we are doing the national COVID-19 vaccination exercise as part of our strategies to reduce COVID to the barest minimum."
This proactive approach reflects Ghana's proactive stance in combating COVID-19 and underscores the importance of vaccination in achieving collective immunity. By prioritizing vaccination efforts and maintaining vigilance in monitoring and responding to new cases, Ghana aims to navigate through the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.
As Ghana gears up for the upcoming vaccination drive, it's crucial for individuals to stay informed, engaged, and proactive in their efforts to safeguard themselves and their communities against COVID-19. Together, through collective action and resilience, Ghana can continue its journey towards overcoming the pandemic and building a healthier, safer future for all.
